W.E meet the Prime Minister!

Last week the White Elephant crew all headed down to the University of Canterbury for the inaugural UC Community Engagement Awards. Both our Chairperson Anthony Rohan and our Trust Manager Nathan Durkin received GOLD awards for their integral involvement in the leadership of the Student Volunteer Army after the February Christchurch Earthquakes.

Attending the ceremony were key players in the Christchurch Rebuild including Roger Sutton, Hon Gerry Brownlee, Mayor Bob Parker and Rt Hon John Key. So naturally we took advantage of the photo opp!

Once again a great successful party!

BLACKOUT was held last weekend and was a sell out night. We've great feedback from everyone who attended, seems like it hit all the right spots.

Big ups to all the awesome volunteers who made this possible, The DJs who rocked the night (The T, Anikin, Unfocused, Firefly, Leeroy Jenkins and The Baker) and WE Care for ensuring everyone was safe all night!

As per usual, we've got our next end of term party coming up at the end of term 3. Make sure to check out our facebook for more deatils as they emerge.

WE CARE complete Code of Ethics

Last Friday WE Care completed the Youth Worker Code of Ethics training.

We had a productive day. In the morning everyone went over the actual youth worker Code of Ethics document and assessed possible moral conflicts they may come across while WE Caring and how to deal with them using the Code of Ethics. After lunch there were role plays which left everyone in fits of laughter as we showed what not to do and then what actually to do!

WE Care have now completed all 3 of the major competencies of being a WE Carer with Red Cross First Aid, Save a Mate and Code of Ethics training all complete. Next up is the Comprehensive First Aid top of for those who want to savvy in an emergency situation!

Code of Ethics was a fun and interesting day by all. Thanks to Jane Zintl from the Youth Worker Collective for enlightening us!

A massive THANK YOU to the ASB Community Partnership!!

These guys donated $10,000 to help us set up our mobile service.This service will be operating in Term 3. We'll be setting up 5 suburban hubs (one for each day of the week) where we will be running our HQ which includes: Dj school, Break Dancing Jams, Youth leadership activities, and places for community groups to meet. More info on that soon!

Really appreciate the support ASB have given us in helping making this happen. We know the Christchurch community will really benefit from this support.

Big ups to all those who came out and partied with us at Evolution Last Friday night!

It was a great night thanks to the hard and dedicated work by the HYPE crew and WE Events. With over 400 attendees and a killer DJ lineup the night lived up to its epic reputation.

Our mid term party crew are already hard at work on the next big party so watch this space!

The White Elephant Trust would like to extend a BIG thank you to the guys at Canon for hooking us up with an awesome MX870 printer! These guys recognised our tough situation following the February earthquake and graciously loaned us this all-in-one wifi printer. They have now extended their offer showing their commitment to helping community groups in Canterbury during the rebuild.

Christchurch is destroyed, its centre lies in ruins, the Eastern suburbs are unlivable, thousands of people are being forced to leave home, even the City Council can't get any more insurance.

Who has the ideas to get Christchurch sorted?

The government called for help from the best Canterbury had to offer, to tell them what to do.

Did they pick Richie McCaw? No. Did they pick leading Architech Peter Bevan? No.

They went for talent, verbal skills, brains and youth.

They went for Joey Chamberlain. Otautahi Youth Councillor. Youth Advisor.

WE van makes a debut

We're proud to show off our new wheels! Our new van has just gotten a sweet yellowtastic wrap and it's representing the White Elephant on the streets of your community!

Big ups to the Sign Network for their handy work and to Miles Toyota for making this possible.

Our new Van is now armed with a wall mounted AED and first aid kits not to mention plenty of cargo room to cart around top notch DJ gear so our WE Mixers can mix in style at our events and service delivery.

We took the van down to Winter Soulstice over the weekend with 10 WE Carers and set up camp in the first aid tent. It was awesome to have a solid White Elephant presence and I'm sure those who came in looking for a plaster or a warm place to sit appreciated it too!

Speaking of WE Care.. We were proud to receive First Aid certificates for 8 of our WE Carers last week. Its nice to know these guys have those essential skills to ensure the safety and well-being of the young people who come to our events.

We've relaunched WE Care in 2011 are have a solid group of volunteers who have undergone training and are coming along to our parties and keeping an eye out for anyone who may need some extra attention.

We had 10 volunteers at Elation the other week who ran coat check and looked after the small minority who had chosen to turn up intoxicated. They provided a great service and everyone who attended had a positive experience. We had over 450 attendees at Elation. Organised by 4 of our young DJs we were super stoked with the success of Elation and look forward to our next End of Term party which will announced soon!

Despite the odd shakes and quakes we're powering stronger than ever! with more and more volunteers joining every week and new projects popping up WE look forward to being here right through the rebuild and for years to come. We'll be sure to update you on what we're getting up to so make sure you pop by again soon.

W.E 3.0 - Going Mobile

Hi guys, alot has been happening down at W.E since the Sept earthquake - we moved into the basement of Unlimited school in the CBD and the place was CRANKING!!

Unfortunately that all came shattering down around us with the Feb earthquake, the building is red stickered, the basement is flooded and the building's in the drop-zone of the Grand Chancellor hotel.

So what have we been busy doing?? Well in the initial 3 weeks, W.E was part of the core crew in helping the Student Volunteer Army mobilise students all over the city cleaning up the silt! We even got the opportunity to meet HRH Prince Willy!

Since then, we've been super super busy planning and strategising for the future. In a nutshell youth can no longer go to a central location to access youth services, so let’s take these services to them!

Our proposal is to collaborate with both hubs in communities, and mobile service providers to provide a smorgasbord of activities to engage young people in a pro-social way. We aim to do this in three key stages. The end result is that we have strengthened communities from the grassroots level, and empowered communities to respond to their own localised issues.

WE-HQ 2.0 now open!!

Well after an uncertain future with our building at Bedford Row, Unlimited School has come to the rescue and allowed us to use their basement space during the weekdays from 3pm!!

Entrance is on Cashel Mall through the roller doors near the corner of Colombo St, go down the escalators to the basement where we'll be running our usual nightly activities. The new space includes:

- huge sprung loaded dance floor

- 3x DJ practice booths/band practice rooms

- large music/meeting room

We're in negotiations for a longer term solution, we'll keep you posted with progress as this could be quite exciting!!!

For the meantime we'll be open from 3pm onwards each weekday, if your group would like to use the space, please contact Nathan on 374 9285

Booze plan makes youth 'scapegoat'

White Elephant's chaiperson makes a comment on the alcohol reform laws:

Chairman of Christchurch youth trust White Elephant, Anthony Rohan, said young people were a "soft target" for the Government.

"It's not just something young people do, but they are a soft target because young people feel like they don't have a voice so you can say anything you want about them," Rohan said.

He said restricting those under 20 to drinking in licensed premises would not necessarily make them drink more responsibly. The kind of bars that targeted youth encouraged binge drinking with happy hours and reduced prices, he said.
